Novak Djokovic makes his return to American soil when he plays Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Western & Southern Open second round.
The big story in the men’s draw at the ATP Masters 1000 event sees Djokovic set to play his first match in the United States for nearly two years.
The lifting of COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international air travellers earlier this year means the 23-time grand slam winner will appear on American soil for the first time since his defeat by Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open final.
And two-time champion Djokovic boasts fond memories of this tournament – lifting the trophy in 2018 and 2020, while reaching a further five finals.
A winner at the Australian Open, French Open and Adelaide already this season, the Serb is set for his first outing since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final last month.
The world number one became only the fifth player to defeat Djokovic in 2023 after Medvedev, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti and Dusan Lajovic.
That is the nature of the task awaiting Davidovich Fokina, who has lost three of their four previous meetings, including a straight-sets defeat in round three at Roland Garros.
But the world number 23, who defeated Tomas Etcheverry 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round, comes into the clash fresh from a strong run to the National Bank Open semi-finals last week.
The Spaniard arrived in Toronto having lost his opening match at three of five events since the French Open, but defeated the likes of Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev before eventually succumbing to Alex de Minaur in the last four.
Also a quarter-finalist at Indian Wells, Barcelona, Estoril and Adelaide this season, Davidovich Fokina will not be intimidated by the prospect of facing a rusty Djokovic.
The winner of this match will play either Alex de Minaur or Gael Monfils in the Western & Southern Open third round.
Play gets underway at around 12am BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
