Novak Djokovic aims to continue his dominant and unblemished record against Gael Monfils when they clash at the Western & Southern Open.

Indeed, the head-to-head record is about as one-sided as they come with Djokovic having prevailed in all 18 meetings between the players – most recently a straight-sets victory in Madrid last year.

After almost two years away, the 23-time major winner is back competing in the United States after COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international air travellers was lifted.

The reigning Australian and French Open champion is looking to mark his return by completing a hat-trick of titles in Cincinnati, where he lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020 while reaching a further five finals.

And he heads into his second match of the week relatively fresh after playing just a single set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who was forced to retire injured shortly after falling behind.

Monfils is looking to become only the sixth player to defeat Djokovic in 2023 after Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti and Dusan Lajovic.

Although, if ever the Frenchman was in the form to finally break the jinx against his bogey player, it is now.

Indeed, he has enjoyed a resurgence in recent times – beating Christopher Eubanks and Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to the National Bank Open quarter-finals, as well as overcoming sixth seed Alexander Bublik at the Citi Open.

And if that wasn’t enough, Monfils has already taken out two top-15 players this week – coming from behind to defeat Cameron Norrie before sinking Alex de Minaur in straight sets.

And not only would victory here end his wretched streak against Djokovic, but it would mark his first quarter-final appearance in Cincinnati for 12 years.

The winner of this match will take on either Taylor Fritz or Dusan Lajovic in the Quarter-Finals on Friday.

Play gets underway at around 1.30am BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
