Iga Swiatek and Marketa Vondrousova go head to head in a mouth-watering Western & Southern Open quarter-final clash on Friday.

One of the standout ties of the round pits the reigning French and US Open champion against the recently crowned Wimbledon champion, with a place in the last four at stake.

Both are also enjoying their best performances at the WTA 1000 event, where they had never previously reached the quarter-finals.

Swiatek is targeting her fifth title of the season to add to her triumphs at Roland Garros, Stuttgart, Warsaw and Doha.

The world number one, who was beaten by Jessica Pegula in last week’s National Bank Open semi-finals, roared past former Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0, before coming from behind to eventually breeze past Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Swiatek was also a dominant winner in her only previous encounter with Vondrousova – which came in round one of the 2020 French Open – trouncing the Czech 6-1, 6-2 on the way to landing her first grand slam.

But we can expect a much tighter contest this time around with the latter having recently broken her major duck at Wimbledon.

Vondrousova, who was also a semi-finalist in Linz earlier this year, subsequently climbed into the world’s top 10 for the first time following her fairy-tale at the All England Club.

The Czech arrived in Cincinnati having suffered first-round exits in each of her three previous appearances. But she has well and truly cast that to one side – reeling off six sets without reply in taking out Katerina Siniakova, Anastasia Potapova and Sloane Stephens.

The winner of this match will play either Coco Gauff or Jasmine Paolini in the Western & Southern Open semi-finals.

Play gets underway at 4pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Center Court.
