Frances Tiafoe and a resurgent Stan Wawrinka go head to head in the second round of the Western & Southern Open.

History suggests we can expect a closely fought contest between the two players in Cincinnati.

Although Wawrinka has won all three previous meetings – most recently at Queen’s Club last year – the players have never been separated by more than two games, with two of those encounters going to a third-set tie-break.

The three-time grand slam winner has enjoyed a resurgence this season, climbing back up to 51st on the ATP rankings.

Wawrinka reached round three at Wimbledon for the first time since 2015, before beating the likes of Federico Coria, Roberto Carballes Baena and Lorenzo Sonego on the way to reaching the Umag final, where he lost out to Alexei Popyrin.

The 38-year-old began his 14th appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event, where he was a semi-finalist in 2012 and reached a further three quarter-finals, by defeating Brandon Nakashima in straight sets, and will be eager to build on his momentum here.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe is aiming to reach round three for the first time since his 2017 debut.

The American is one of only eight players to win multiple titles on the ATP Tour this season, having triumphed in Houston and Stuttgart.

But despite reaching the Indian Wells Masters semi-finals, his progressed has stalled in recent times after bowing out in round three at Wimbledon, while Milos Raonic defeating him at the first hurdle in Toronto last week.

Although, his confidence received a timely boost following a hard-earned victory over another two-time ATP winner this season in Tallon Griekspoor in the opening round.

The winner of this match will play either fifth seed Casper Ruud or Max Purcell in the Western & Southern Open third round.

Play gets underway at around 2am BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Grandstand Court.
