Stefanos Tsitsipas launches his quest to go one better at the Western & Southern Open against Ben Shelton on Wednesday.

The world number four arrives in Cincinnati eager to continue his impressive record at the ATP Masters 1000 event in recent years.

After reaching back-to-back semi-finals in 2020 and 2021, Tsitsipas went one better by advancing to the final 12 months ago, but was denied the title following a 7–6(7–0), 6–2 defeat by Borna Coric.

The Greek recently claimed his maiden ATP title of the season in Los Cabos – also reaching the final of the Australian Open and Barcelona Open this term – but does not boast the strongest of form.

Indeed, he has suffered early exits in five of his last six tournaments – including Wimbledon, Stuttgart and Halle – and most recent fell at the first hurdle to a resurgent Gael Monfils in Toronto last week.

That will encourage Shelton as the home favourite looks to get his season back on track.

The American appeared on course to enjoy a promising season on the ATP Tour when he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals in January.

But the world number 40 has failed to subsequently kick on, losing his opening match at 11 tournaments since and registering just seven wins from a possible 24.

However, one of those came against Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks in the first round of this event, in which he boasts fond memories after defeated fifth seed Casper Ruud on debut 12 months ago.

This will be the first ATP tour-level meeting between two players desperate for strong performances this week to build momentum towards the US Open later this month.

The match will be contested over the best of three sets on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the Western & Southern Open third round.
