Venus Williams looks to end a four-year wait for successive WTA wins when she faces Qinwen Zheng in the Western & Southern Open second round.

The veteran is gearing up for only her ninth WTA match of the 2023 season, but does so fresh from an impressive 6-4, 7-5 victory over 16th seed Veronika Kudermetova in the opening round.

That gave Williams her first win over a top-40 opponents since 2019 – the same year she last put a sequence of victories together at the highest level.

But the 43-year-old, who also demonstrated solid fitness levels during her recent three-plus-hour success over Camila Giorgi at the Rothesay Classic, will be confident of finally ending the wait this week in Cincinnati, where she is making her 11th appearance and was a semi-finalist back in 2012.

Standing in her way is a player who recently claimed her maiden WTA title in Palermo.

Indeed, Zheng entered the winners’ circle after a strong campaign that also saw her beat the likes of Daria Kasatkina and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko on the way to reaching the semi-finals in Dubai.

The 20-year-old, who was also a quarter-finalist in Rome, has risen to 24th in the WTA rankings and continued building momentum towards the US Open later this month with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opening round here.

A Last 16 clash against either world number one Iga Swiatek or former Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins awaits the winner.

Play gets underway at around 8pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Grandstand Court.
