Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev put their maiden Wimbledon title bids on the line in a blockbuster semi-final on Friday.

Both players are just two victories away from getting their hands on the famous old trophy for the first time, but are set for the toughest tests of their credentials thus far on Centre Court.

The third meeting between the players will undoubtedly be the highest-profile to date, with Novak Djokovic awaiting in Sunday’s final.

In the second round here two years ago, Medvedev dropped just seven games in a commanding straight-sets victory over a raw 18-year-old Alcaraz, who exacted his revenge for the loss of just five games in this year’s Indian Wells final.

The most successful players of the 2023 season, both have already landed five titles apiece with Medvedev (46) boasting just one match win greater than Alcaraz (45).

The youngest Wimbledon semi-finalist since Djokovic in 2007, the Spaniard is also the youngest player to reach the last four at three straight grand slams played.

Dropping just two sets – against Nicolas Jarry and 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini – the world number one is also just the third man to reach three semi-finals in his first 10 majors, following in the footsteps of Rafael Nadal and coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Former US Open champion Medvedev is targeting his fifth championship match from six semi-final appearances at a slam.

Having come from behind to beat Marton Fucsovics, the third seed repeated the feat against surprise package Christopher Eubanks and ensure a sixth victory from his first seven major quarter-finals – a tally only matches by Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem among players who turned professional this century.

It promises to be an epic battle with a title showdown against reigning champion Djokovic on offer to the winner.

Play gets underway at around 4.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.
