Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune go head to head in blockbuster quarter-final encounter at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Two of the game’s rising stars and likely flagbearers for the next generation collide in what promises to be a mouth-watering encounter at SW19.
Separated by just 12 days, the 20-year-olds will contest the first Wimbledon quarter-final between two players aged under 21 in the Open Era. And not since Florian Mayer and Mario Ancic in 2004 have two or more such players featured in the last eight at the All England Club.
They also join a highly exclusive group of players to appear at this stage of Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year, along with a certain Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz has firmly placed his initial grass-court concerns firmly behind him. The Spaniard, who triumphed at Queen’s Club last month, is now on a nine-match winning run on surface, becoming the youngest player to enjoy such a streak since Boris Becker in 1987.
And the world number one has demonstrated his mettle to reach the last eight here for the first time, battling past 25th seed Nicolas Jarry in four sets before reeling off three on the spin after losing the opener against 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini.
The same can certainly be said of Rune, who is the first Scandinavian male to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon since Robin Soderling 13 years ago.
The Dane also recovered from losing the opening set in his fourth-round clash against 2014 semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov. He had previously valiantly battled back from the brink of defeat against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in round three.
A semi-final showdown with either third seed Daniil Medvedev or surprise package Christopher Eubanks awaits the winner of this highly enthralling tie at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 3.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.
