Brilliant Boulter sends Pliskova packing as Broady stuns Schwartzman
Katie Boulter is through to the third round at Wimbledon after stunning 2021 finalist Karolina Pliskova on Thursday.
The world number 127 had claimed the notable scalp of Pliskova at Eastbourne last week.
And the home favourite repeated the feat on Centre Court as she came from behind to deny the sixth seed after a nail-biting deciding set 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4.
Through to round three at a Grand Slam for the first time, an emotional Boulter dedicated the biggest win of her career to her late grandmother, who passed away on Tuesday.
There was further British joy at SW19, where Liam Broady also secured his maiden Slam third-round appearance after recovering two sets to one down to thwart 12th seed Diego Schwartzman.
Former boys’ finalist Broady took the opening set 6-2, but was pegged back as the Argentine won the next two 6-4 6-0.
But the Briton dug deep to narrowly edge the tie-break in the fourth, before dominating the decider 6-1 to advance into unchartered territory.
Heather Watson also matched her best performance at Wimbledon as she completed a 7-5 6-4 victory over Qiang Wang, but there was no joy for Alastair Gray, Jack Draper and Harriet Dart.
Gray was ousted in straight sets by Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz while, despite winning their opening sets, Draper and Dart were eventually overturned by Alex De Minaur and Jessica Pegula respectively.
Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal recorded his 16th successive Grand Slam victory after seeing off Ricardas Berankis 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-3, while Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Jordan Thompson in straight sets to set up a showdown with Nick Kyrgios, who overcame Cinch Championship finalist Filip Krajinovic 6-2 6-3 6-1.
Top seed Iga Swiatek claimed her 37th straight win – matching Martina Hingis’ streak from 1997 – as she came through a tough test against world number 138 Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4 4-6 6-3.
Former champions Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova came through in straight sets against Kirsten Flipkens and Ana Bogdan respectively, as did Paula Badosa against Irina Bara and Coco Gauff against Mihaela Buzarnescu.
But last year’s semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov bowed out; going down 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-6(6) against Brandon Nakashima.
