Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Djokovic’s class to shine through
The semi-final for Wimbledon is tantalisingly set up with Britain’s number one, Cameron Norrie, clashing with the number one seed, and reigning Wimbledon men’s champion, Novak Djokovic.
Norrie has enjoyed a truly spectacular tournament and is now agonisingly close to the final. It’s hard to imagine a tougher test for the 26-year-old though, and the odds are heavily stacked against him in Friday’s encounter against the man with six Wimbledon trophies to his name.
Britain’s number one ranked player has come through some big tests during the tournament, none bigger than his epic five-set win over David Goffin, which saw him fight back from a set down twice before pushing through to claim the victory. Norrie looked tired at points during his quarter final win though and seemed to be running on adrenaline and the backing from the crowd during the final set.
Djokovic hasn’t been at his imperious best during the tournament, dropping sets to Soonwoo Kwon and Tim Van Rijthoven before finding himself two sets down to Jannik Sinner in the quarter final. He was able to fight back to claim the win, but it was far from an easy victory for the 35-year-old and he showed some weaknesses against the number 10 seed.
It’s sure to be an enthralling match between the sides and, even though Norrie will have the crowd firmly behind him, it’s likely to be a bridge too far for the Brit and Djokovic should be appearing in Sunday’s final. The Serbian isn’t the all conquering powerhouse he once was, however, and Norrie could well end up winning a set and making life uncomfortable for his opponent before succumbing to his ability.
