Taylor Fritz v Yannick Hanfmann live stream | Wimbledon 2023 preview

Taylor Fritz faces a potential banana skin when he faces Yannick Hanfmann in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday.

The American suffered a surprise straight-sets defeat against the German when they collided in Rome a few weeks ago. Indeed, Hanfmann prevailed a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victor in the second round.

Fritz will be desperate to avert a repeat result here as he looks to improve a generally modest grass-court singles season thus far.

The world number nine, who is 2-3 on surface in 2023, most recently fell at the first hurdle in Eastbourne, where he was top seed and is a two-time champion, after going down in straight sets against compatriot Mackenzie McDonald.

Although, that did come after he reached the men’s doubles final alongside Jiri Lehecka at Queen’s.

But while he has only progressed beyond the second round on two of his six previous appearances, Fritz did reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals 12 months ago – marking his best performance at a grand slam to date.

Matching that this time around would give the Delray Beach Open winner his seventh last-eight appearance of the season, but he will be wary of Hanfmann.

After defeating Fritz, the German also beat Andrey Rublev on the way to reaching the quarter-finals in Rome.

And the 31-year-old arrives at Wimbledon fresh from achieving his highest career ranking to date, having climbed into the top 50 and 48th following a run to the semi-finals in Mallorca last time out.

The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of five sets on Monday, will play either Mikael Ymer or Alex Molcan in the second round at Wimbledon.
