The 2022 Wimbledon champion is going through the gears but Elena Rybakina has a tough test to overcome now in the shape of French Open semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Rybakina was under something of a cloud of unknowns heading into the tournament. The virus that knocked her out of the French Open at this fourth round stage still seemed to be effecting her during her warm-up events. However, her dismantling of Katie Boulter on Centre Court showed that the Kazakh representative looks to be right back to her best.
Haddad Maia is going to provide a stern test of Rybakina’s credentials though. The Brazilian came into Wimbledon 2022 on a real hot streak on the grass, which tells us that she is very comfortable on the surface. She didn’t perform at SW19 last year, but the quality that she showed in her French Open run a few weeks ago will have given her great confidence in the biggest events.
The pair have played twice in 2023 and it is Haddad Maia who has won on both occasions. The Brazilian won as a big underdog in Abu Dhabi on the hard courts there and then benefitted from a Rybakina retirement in the second set in Stuttgart on the clay.
Rybakina’s Wimbledon pedigree still gives her the edge in this particular encounter, and would be the fancy to progress. However, the head-to-head record really does demonstrate how tough this could be for the champion.
A blockbuster quarter-final awaits the winner of this match with either Ons Jabeur or Petra Kvitova in waiting at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 1.30pm BST on Monday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Centre Court.
