Two of the biggest hitters on the WTA Tour meet in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon as American Madison Keys takes on Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Anyone who watched Madison Keys in the previous round cannot help but to have been impressed with her battling spirit. The former US Open finalist was in deep trouble against Mirra Andreeva but instead of falling away and allowing the errors to mount up, Keys regained her composure and fought her way back into the match.
Sabalenka has gone from strength to strength during the tournament. Since facing difficulty against Varvara Gracheva in the second round the Belarusian hasn’t lost a set, indeed hasn’t lost more than four games in a set.
The head-to-head between the two is tied at 1-1, with Keys winning their last meeting, which also happened to be on grass in Berlin in 2021. However, it would be fair to say that Sabalenka has moved up a couple of levels in her game since that meeting.
Keys has now won nine in a row and clearly has a lot of confidence from that run. However, Sabalenka has become a more consistent player and can match Keys’ ball striking ability. This should be enough for her to progress into the semi-finals here.
The winner of this match will play either sixth seed Ons Jabeur or defending champion Elena Rybakina in the last four at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 1pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on No.1 Court.
