Nick Kyrgios vs Rafael Nadal – Kyrgios to edge close tie
Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal both came through tough quarter finals to set up this intriguing semi-final tie with both players hoping for a place in Sunday’s final.
Kyrgios has been one of the best players in the tournament so far, coming through some tricky ties in his own, unique style. There’s been no denying his quality on the court with wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Brandon Nakashima and Cristian Garin and he comes into this match as slight favourite to make it to the final.
Rafael Nadal has struggled at times this summer, with a foot injury hampering his play slightly but he’s managed to come through each test he’s faced. The biggest came in the quarter final when he found himself a set down twice against American, Taylor Fritz, before battling back to claim a win in a tie breaker in the fifth set.
Both men could lay claim to being the most deserving of making it through to the final and it should truly be a close contest, with the foot injury of Nadal making it almost too close to call. Kyrgios has already seen two of his match in this competition go to five sets, with Nadal’s quarter final match doing the same, and it could be a good bet that it happens in this tie too.
Another match going 4+ hours could be too much for Nadal however and that niggling injury could make all the difference when it comes down to who can find the stamina and grind out the win. We’re back Kyrgios to edge things and make it to his first Grand Slam final, leaving Nadal focusing on the US Open later this year.
