Matteo Berrettini pulls out of Wimbledon after positive COVID-19 test
Matteo Berrettini is the latest player to withdraw from Wimbledon following a positive COVID-19 test result.
Last year’s finalist, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic, was one of the favourites to go all the way at SW19 in 2022.
Indeed, the Italian had won back-to-back grass-court titles at Stuttgart and Queen’s Club, while no ATP player has recorded more victories on the surface since 2019 (33).
However, his hopes have been dashed after returning a positive test ahead of his first-round clash with Cristian Garin.
Berrettini is the second player in as many days to withdraw from the season’s third Slam after 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic pulled out on Monday.
“I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result,” the Italian said.
“I have no words to describe the extreme disappointment I feel.
“The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger.
“Thank you for the support.”
