Andy Murray begins his 15th Wimbledon campaign with a first-round clash against compatriot Ryan Peniston on Tuesday.
One of the highlights of day two at the All England Club sees an all-British battle unfold on Centre Court, with a potential showdown against Stefanos Tsitsipas on offer to the winner.
Back into the world’s top 40, Murray could well have been arriving at Wimbledon as a seed but for his early exit at the hands of Alex de Minaur at Queen’s Club a fortnight ago.
Nevertheless, the three-time major winner still has plenty of momentum as he returns to the scene of his finest hours.
It is now 10 years since he ended that long wait for British men’s singles glory at SW19 with a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic on Centre Court, before triumphing again against Milos Raonic in 2016.
Murray has captured three Challenger Tour titles this season – including two on grass at Nottingham and Surbiton – while he defeated Alexander Zverev on the way to reaching the Doha final.
The 36-year-old, who also captured silverware at Aix-en-Provence, has never lost in the opening round at Wimbledon, where his opponent is set to appear for only the second time.
Though this will be just his 13th tour-level match, Peniston already boasts fairly impressive grass-court pedigree, having reached the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club and Eastbourne.
The world number 268 defeated the likes of Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in order to do so, while he also overcame world number 37 Ugo Humbert at Queen’s recently.
A Challenger Tour semi-finalist in Noumea and Tenerife this term, Peniston will certainly relish the opportunity to share Centre Court with his idol.
The winner of this match will play either Tsitsipas or former US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the second round at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 3.30pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.
