Rafael Nadal launches his quest for a third consecutive Grand Slam with a tie against Francisco Cerundolo in Round One at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Nadal has been the most in-form player on the circuit so far this year, having won 31 matches at the expense of just four defeats, moving two clear at the top of the all-time majors list courtesy of his triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open.
Nadal has skipped Wimbledon last year and it was not 100 per cent sure that he would compete in the grass slam this year as he had been struggling with injuries and fatigue problems at the French Open.
Grass is Nadal’s least favorite surface, however, he still holds an excellent record of 75 victories and just 25 defeats on this surface and claimed glory here in 2008 and 2010.
Cerundolo is known as a clay specialist and that’s why he has only played six matches on the grass surface in his career. Last year at Wimbledon, he was eliminated in the third qualifying match. This year, he has won just once in three matches.
The Argentinian is now aiming to win his first match at the Grand Slam level at Wimbledon but faces a formidable task against one of the sport’s all-time greats.
