Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka resume their grand slam rivalry in a mouth-watering third-round clash at Wimbledon on Friday.

Boasting a combined 26 major titles, two of the game’s more decorated players collide for the ninth time in a slam – and first time at SW19 – with a showdown against Hubert Hurkacz on offer to the winner.

The previous eight such meetings have been shared. Although, Wawrinka has prevailed in the last three – including the finals of the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open – while his 2019 victory at Flushing Meadows came after Djokovic retired injured.

Nevertheless, the Serb has dominated the overall ATP head-to-head 20-6; most recently a straight-sets success in Rome last year.

The seven-time champion has started his quest for a record-equalling eighth title by reeling off six sets without reply against Pedro Cachin and Jordan Thompson.

Against the latter, he achieved yet another career milestone by recording his 350th match win at grand slam tournaments, and he will be a heavy favourite to prevail here.

A two-time quarter-finalist at the All England Club, Wawrinka is through to round three for the first time since reaching the second of those in 2015.

The Swiss world number 88 has launched his 17th grass-court major appearance with victories over Emil Ruusuvuori and Tomas Etcheverry, dropping just a single set along the way.

Wawrinka also beat Djokovic en route to capturing his other grand slam at the 2014 Australian Open, and the 38-year-old will hope that serves as a positive omen as he aims to embark on another strong run at SW19.

The winner of this match will play 2021 semi-finalist Hurkacz in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Play gets underway at around 7.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.
