Jessica Pegula looks to match her best performance at Wimbledon when she faces Cristina Bucsa in round two on Thursday.
This year, the American is looking to progress beyond the third round at SW19 for the first time, having also reached that stage 12 months ago.
Pegula does not boast the strongest record on grass, though she recently matched her best performance on surface by reaching the quarter-finals at Eastbourne.
And the Doha runner-up will be eager to build on that in a season in which she also made it to the semi-finals in Dubai and Miami.
The fourth seed faced a difficult starter against compatriot Lauren Davis, eventually prevailing in three sets 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-3.
Meanwhile, Bucsa was forced to come through a thrilling tie-break to edge past Kamilla Rakhimova in the opening round.
The Spaniard, who is making her debut at Wimbledon, subsequently ended an unwanted streak of six successive first-round exits during a generally modest campaign.
But the world number 78 has proven she can deliver on the big stage. Indeed, she defeated former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu on the way to reaching round three at the Australian Open – her best performance at a slam to date.
And Bucsa has claimed silverware this term, triumphing alongside Bibiane Schoofs in the women’s doubles event at Lyon five months ago.
The winner of this match will play either Elisabetta Cocciaretto or Rebeka Masarova in the third round at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 6pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on No.1 Court.
