Casper Ruud looks to avoid a scalp when he faces home favourite Liam Broady in the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
One of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour in recent times, Ruud has reached the final in three of the last five grand slam events.
Runner-up to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the last two French Open finals, the Norwegian also just came up short against Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open in September.
The fourth seed is now looking to go the extra step and become only the third Scandinavian male to triumph at SW19 after Bjorn Borg and Stefan Edberg.
But he will need to improve his grass-court game in order to do so. Indeed, Ruud’s first-round victory over Laurent Lokoli represented only his second Wimbledon win and the fourth of his career in nine matches on surface, where his best performance was a run to the quarter-finals in Mallorca two years ago.
And it was not straightforward by any means, the world number four pegged back to a set apiece by the Frenchman before eventually prevailing 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
By contrast, Broady enjoyed a much smoother passage into the second round, defeating Constant Lestienne 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 for only his third tour-level win of the season.
A former juniors doubles champion and singles runner-up, the likeable Briton knows what it takes to claim a scalp at the All England Club, stunning 12th seed Diego Schwartzman at this stage on the way to reaching round three 12 months ago.
That represented his best performance at a grand slam to date, though earning another scalp here against Ruud – and deny the Norwegian his first appearance in the last 32 – would see the 29-year-old equal that.
The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of five sets on Thursday, will progress to the third round at Wimbledon.
