Elena Rybakina vs Ons Jabeur: Jabeur to win her maiden Grand Slam
The final of the ladies tournament at Wimbledon is set with the world number two, Ons Jabeur, taking on the athlete ranked as 23rd in the world, Elena Rybakina.
Both women have had fantastic tournaments, dropping just three sets between them and both will be targeting their first ever Grand Slam victory. Indeed, this will be the first major final for both women and this sets up a truly intriguing tie to crown the new Queen of Wimbledon.
Rybakina has enjoyed a decent year so far but this is the summit in terms of her young career. She’s won two previous competitions, the Bucharest Open and the Hobert International in Australia but had only made the quarter final stage of a Grand Slam once, in last year’s French Open. This represents a big jump into the elite for the Kazakhstan player but she’s shown real class throughout the grass tournament, losing just one set on her way to the final.
Jabeur has had an ever better year than her young opponent, winning the Madrid Open before making the final of the Italian Open. Her Grand Slam record hasn’t been as good in 2022 though, with the Tunisian missing the Australian Open before suffering a shock first round defeat at Roland Garros. She’s gone about her business without fuss in SW19 this year though, dropping just two sets and only being pushed into a tiebreak situation once.
Jabeur comes into the final as the favourite and this is a good representation of where these two women are in their careers at this point. We can see the match going all the way to a third set but the 27 year old Jabeur should have enough about her to push through for the victory. Rybakina has a mean serve though and it wouldn’t be a shock to see her lead the way when it comes to aces. There is a little bit more to Jabeur’s game though and we’re siding with her lifting the trophy on Saturday afternoon.
