Aryna Sabalenka will become the new world number one with victory over Ons Jabeur in their mouth-watering Wimbledon semi-final on Thursday.

There is plenty riding on what promises to be an epic clash between the player to beat in grand slams this season and the player to beat on grass in recent times.

The winner will secure their place in Saturday’s showpiece, where Marketa Vondrousova awaits after her dominant straight-sets victory over Elina Svitolina.

Following Iga Swiatek’s defeat by Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals, Sabalenka can displace the Pole at the summit of the WTA rankings by reaching her maiden final at SW19.

The Australian Open winner is now 17-1 in majors this season following her commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Eastbourne champion Madison Keys, who was on a nine-match winning streak on grass.

Sabalenka became only the third woman to win each of her first six major quarter-finals after Ann Jones and Chris Evert.

A semi-finalist at the French Open last month, she is also the first woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to reach the last four at each of the season’s opening three slams.

Sabalenka has prevailed in three of her four previous meetings with Jabeur, including a straight-sets win here in the 2021 quarter-finals.

Runner-up to Elena Rybakina 12 months ago, the Tunisian avenged that defeat in sublime fashion on Wednesday.

Jabeur recovered from losing the opening set, winning eight of the last nine games to prevail 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1 and secure her 27th grass-court win since 2021 – the most by any player during that span.

The last woman to reach successive finals at the All England Club was Williams four years ago, and the sixth seed is one more triumph away from matching that achievement.

Play gets underway at around 3pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Centre Court.
