Serena Williams marks her return to Grand Slam action with a First Round clash against Harmony Tan at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Williams opted to take some time away from the sport in 2021 and missed the US Open, as well as the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year.

Wimbledon marks her return to Grand Slam tennis, although she did compete in the Eastbourne International earlier this month, partnering with Ons Jabeur and reaching the Third Round before the pair had to retire due to an injury picked up by the Tunisian.

Serena has seven Wimbledon singles titles to her name, the most recent coming in 2016, and remains one adrift of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slams.

Once the world number one for a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, Williams now finds herself at 1204 in the rankings and will be out to atone for her First Round exit here 12 months ago.

Of the last 12 Wimbledon finals, the American has featured in seven of them, but at the age of 40, time looks to be running out for her to add to that tally.

Her opening opponent comes in the shape of world number 113 Tan – who reached the final of the WTA 125k in Gaiba and was only defeated by Alison van Uytvanck – who lost to Emma Raducanu on Monday.

The 24-year-old Frenchwoman reached the Second Round of this year’s Australian Open and is now making her Wimbledon debut against one of the all-time greats.

Either Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo or American qualifier Christina McHale will await the winner in the Second Round later in the week.
