Jannik Sinner aims to avoid becoming Roman Safiullin’s latest victim when they face off in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday.
An intriguing last-eight showdown on No.1 Court pits the eighth seed, who is quickly becoming accustomed to this stage at SW19, against the debutant.
Sinner is appearing in his fifth major quarter-final, and second in as many years at the All England Club.
A winner in Montpellier and runner-up in Miami and Rotterdam this season, the Italian has dropped just a single set on the way to taking his tally of wins for the year to 36.
The eighth seed has defeated Diego Schwartzman along the way, as well as Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Quentin Halys and Daniel Galan.
Meanwhile, Safiullin has demonstrated bundles of determination during his maiden main-draw appearance at the grass-court major.
Indeed, the world number 92 has come from behind to see off two seeds and former semi-finalists along the way, in Roberto Bautista Agut and Denis Shapovalov.
Safiullin, who has also beaten Guido Pella and Corentin Moutet in straight sets, is the third player ranked outside the ATP’s top 75 to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in the last decade, following in the footsteps of Lukasz Kobot and Nick Kyrgios.
The winner of this match will play either reigning champion Novak Djokovic or Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at around 4pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on No.1 Court.
