Elina Svitolina and Marketa Vondrousova have eyes on the Wimbledon final when they collide in a tasty last-four clash on Thursday.

The two unseeded players, who have enjoyed inspired runs at SW19 this fortnight, go head to head for the right to face either Aryna Sabalenka or Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s championship match.

Svitolina is only the fifth female wildcard to reach a grand slam semi-final – and second at Wimbledon after Sabine Lisicki in 2011.

Meanwhile, Vondrousova is the fifth left-hander in the last 30 years to make the last four at the All England Club, after Martina Navratilova, Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova and Angelique Kerber.

Having already defeated Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka, Svitolina then went and stunned world number one Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals.

The Ukrainian was pegged back from 4-1 up in the second-set tie-break, but responded brilliantly to dominate the decider 6-2 and become only the third woman to defeat four major winners in a single slam.

The other players to achieve that feat were Serena Williams at the 1999 US Open and Justine Henin at the 2005 French Open, with both players subsequently going on to lift the trophy.

World number 76 Svitolina, who is appearing in her second Wimbledon semi-final, will hope that serves as a positive omen as she looks to make her major breakthrough.

Although, she faces a woman that has prevailed in their two most recent meetings, including a straight-sets triumph at this stage of the delayed 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Vondrousova has also embarked on an impressive run to only her second major semi-final, taking out four seeds in Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Marie Bouzkova and Jessica Pegula.

The former French Open finalist’s victory over Pegula was particularly impressive, reeling off five straight games from 4-1 down in the deciding set to stun the fourth seed.

She is now just two more such wins away from becoming only the third Czech woman to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish after Jana Novotna (1998) and Kvitova (2011 and 2014).

Whoever prevails here will become the second lowest-ranked player to reach the women’s singles final at Wimbledon after Serena Williams five years ago.

Play gets underway at 1.30pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Centre Court.
