Stefanos Tsitsipas begins his latest quest for a maiden grand slam with a tasty first-round clash against Dominic Thiem at Wimbledon.
One of the standout ties of the opening round at SW19 pits the two-time major finalist against the former US Open champion, with a potential showdown with Andy Murray on offer to the winner.
The two players are facing off for the 10th time in their careers, but it will be their first meeting on grass.
Thiem has won five of the nine previous encounters, although Tsitsipas prevailed in a tie-break in their most recent clash at Madrid earlier this year.
A runner-up in Melbourne and Barcelona, Tsitsipas is still seeking his first title of the season but, despite reaching the French Open quarter-finals, he arrives off the back of successive last-16 exits in Stuttgart, Halle and Mallorca.
The fifth seed has also fallen at the first hurdle three times in his five Wimbledon appearances, while he was beaten by eventual runner-up Nick Kyrgios in a bad-tempered third-round clash last year.
Nevertheless, the Greek does know what it takes to triumph on grass having gone all the way in Mallorca 12 months ago, and will desperately want a deep run here.
The first obstacle he must overcome is Thiem, who returns to the All England Club for the first time since 2019.
Like Tsitsipas, a run to the fourth round represents the Austrian’s best performance at the grass-court major, reaching that stage in 2017.
Injury struggles have prevented Thiem from truly kicking on from his success at Flushing Meadows in 2020, and he arrives at Wimbledon ranked 91st on the ATP Tour.
But though a quarter-finalist at Estoril and Munich this season, he has suffered first-round defeats in three of his four most recent events.
The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of five sets on Tuesday, will face either Murray or compatriot Ryan Peniston in the second round at Wimbledon.
