Venus Williams launches her 24th Wimbledon campaign with a tasty first-round clash against Elina Svitolina on Monday.
One of the most eye-catching ties of the opening round pits a former champion against a player recently ranked as high as third in the world.
Over a quarter of a century since her maiden appearance, veteran Williams will once again descend on SW19, where she has won a combined 11 titles (five singles, six doubles) during her decorated career.
Receiving a wildcard to return to the All England Club, the 43-year-old demonstrated her impressive fitness levels during her victory over Camila Giorgi at the Rothesay Classic, which lasted well over three hours.
Although, it is worth noting she has gone four years without recording successive victories on the WTA Tour.
Additionally, Svitolina has prevailed in the most recent three of their four meetings – all in straight sets.
The Ukrainian has demonstrated no loss of hunger since returning to the tour after maternity leave.
Indeed, she recently triumphed in Strasbourg before embarking on a strong run to her ninth grand slam quarter-final at the French Open, where she was eventually beaten by Aryna Sabalenka.
And Svitolina will fancy her chances of building on that momentum at Wimbledon, where she has already demonstrated her credentials having reached the semi-finals four years ago.
The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of three sets on Monday, will set up a showdown with either 28th seed Elise Mertens or Slovakian qualifier Viktoria Hruncakova in the second round at Wimbledon.
