Novak Djokovic will launch his quest for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title against Pedro Cachin, with the draw confirmed on Friday.
The Serb, who has already won the Australian Open and French Open this season, is aiming to move level with Roger Federer and become the joint-most successful player in men’s singles history at SW19,
Djokovic would also match the feats of Federer and Bjorn Borg by winning a fifth successive Wimbledon crown, while notching up a record-breaking 24th grand slam singles triumph in the Open Era.
The first obstacle he must overcome is Argentina’s Cachin, who will make his bow at SW19 on Monday.
Djokovic is in the same quarter of the draw as seventh seed Andrey Rublev, who marks his return by facing Max Purcell, and could play Casper Ruud in the last four and what would be a repeat of their Roland Garros final, which he won in straight sets.
Fourth seed Ruud plays Laurent Lokoli while top seed – and recent Queen’s Club champion – Carlos Alcaraz opens against another Frenchman in Jeremy Chardy.
British number one Cameron Norrie begins his quest to better last year’s run to the semi-finals against Tomas Machac, while two-time champion Andy Murray faces compatriot Ryan Peniston.
Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune have also been drawn against British opposition in round one in Arthur Ferry and George Loffhagen respectively, with Stefanos Tsitsipas set for a tasty clash against former US Open champion Dominic Thiem.
Last year’s finalist Nick Kyrgios takes on David Goffin as eighth seed Jannik Sinner locks horns with Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
Over in the ladies’ draw, Elena Rybakina will begin her title defence against Shelby Rogers with Iga Swiatek commencing her latest quest for a maiden Wimbledon crown against Zhu Lin.
Ons Jabeur – the 2022 finalist – launches her quest to go one better against Magdalena Frech, while second seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on Panna Udvardy.
Venus Williams – an 11-time winner at SW19 (five singles, six doubles) – starts her 24th campaign against former semi-finalist Elina Svitolina, as two-time champion Petra Kvitova goes up against Jasmine Paolini.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula face familiar opposition in compatriots Sofia Kenin and Lauren Davis respectively, while fifth seed Caroline Garcia plays Katie Volynets with Maria Sakkari taking on Marta Kostyuk.
