The shots will be firing on the clay of Rome when Elena Rybakina and Jelena Ostapenko meet in the semi-final of WTA Rome on Friday evening.

After Iga Swiatek’s retirement from their quarter-final, Rybakina has reached her first clay court semi-final of the season, but her fourth of the season in total. Interestingly, the Kazakh athlete is 8-3 in semi-finals going back 3 years, so is a player who, once she warms up in a tournament, is a very dangerous player.

However, there are few players more dangerous on a tennis court than Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian is fiery, both in game style and temperament. She has history of streaking to the big titles, including the 2017 French Open on clay.

Ostapenko actually leads the head-to-head between these two. The Latvian won the first two battles but Rybakina did win the last time that they were on court. That match was in the quarter-final of the Australian Open, which very much suited Rybakina’s game. Ostapenko may get a little more out of the court here.

There has never been a three-set match between the two. We can expect both a high number of winners and unforced errors as well. Ostapenko may just rise to the occasion once again here to reach her first final of the year.
