The comeback Mums of the WTA Tour clash in the opening round of the Western & Southern Open as Wimbledon semi-finalist Elina Svitolina takes on Denmark’s former Australian Open Champion, Caroline Wozniacki.

Elina Svitolina took only a very short time to get back up to speed in her comeback to tennis earlier this year. So much so that 2023 is actually Svitolina’s third best year by win percentage in her career. The emotional run to the Wimbledon semi-finals has obviously been the highlight, but the Ukranian is a tour title winner again after Strasbourg.

Wozniacki has been more regularly seen in the commentary booth at tennis events in the last few years. However, the former world #1 and 2018 Australian Open winner decided a couple of months ago that she was going to return to the WTA Tour to try and win the US Open. Wozniacki is now 33 and a mother of two but she has already shown that she is ready to compete at a good level.

Wozniacki won her first match back at tour level over Kimberley Birrell and then lost a close match against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in Canada.

This is going to be a tough match either way. Svitolina leads the head-to-head 4-1 but, obviously, there is little relevance to this record at this stage.

Their latest encounter gets under way from around 1:30 BST on Tuesday morning (21:30pm local time) and will be contested over the best of three sets.

Either Daria Kasatkina or Peyton Stearns will await the winner in the second round of the Western & Southern Open.
