Iga Swiatek v Aryna Sabalenka live stream | WTA Stuttgart Final Preview

The top two players in the world at the moment have reached the final of WTA Stuttgart, and it is a repeat of 2022 at Iga Swiatek will play Aryna Sabalenka for the title. 

There is a lot riding on this match. Though it is ‘only’ a WTA500 title, it is more important as a line in the sand as to where these two sit in the pecking order, especially on clay, in the build up to this year’s French Open.

Traditionally, Swiatek has been the stronger player on this surface. The Pole has lost only seven WTA Tour matches on clay since beginning her career on the senior circuit. She was practically unbeatable on the dirt last season and will surely want to provide that feeling once again.

However, Sabalenka is clearly in a different place now to where she was last season. The Australian Open win has provided the Belarusian with such confidence and vindiction. She smashed Anastasia Potapova in the semi-finals, but did have a tough quarterfinal against Paula Badosa. So she has been tested but stood up to that test well.

Last year Swiatek kept Sabalenka at arm’s length, allowing only four games against her. Indeed, the pair met a couple of weeks later in Rome and Swiatek won 6-2 6-1, so she really did have the upper hand in this rivalry when on this surface. Sabalenka did win their last meeting on tour though, albeit on a hard court.

I do think Sabalenka has a chance here against Swiatek. However, there is a big gap to bridge on this surface, and I suspect that Swiatek will have the movement and the defence to frustrate Sabalenka into too many errors here.
