When is the WTA Lexington Open 2020?

The 2020 WTA Lexington Open will be played from 10-16 August.

The WTA International-level event, formally known as the Top Seed Open presented by Bluegrass Orthopaedics, is held at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Lexington, Kentucky.

It will be the first WTA tournament to be played outside Europe since the Abierto Monterrey took place in the first week of March.

WTA Lexington Open Players 2020

The inaugural Top Seed Open could not have asked for a more exciting and star-studded field when it takes place from 10-16 August.

With top-level tennis shut down since early March, and the US Open starting on 31 August, the first tournament to be played outside Europe since before the shutdown has unsurprisingly attracted plenty of star players eager to get back to competition.

Serena Williams

It’s a coup for any tournament to secure the presence of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, let alone a new International event. But the Top Seed Open draw will be headlined by Williams as she returns to competition for the first time since competing in a Fed Cup tie in early February.

Williams will be aiming to tune up her game ahead of her campaign for a seventh US Open title in New York – and looking for her second WTA Tour title of 2020 after having won the ASB Auckland Classic in New Zealand in January.

Sloane Stephens

Champion at the US Open in 2017 and a French Open finalist in 2018, Stephens is currently ranked world no. 37 – but anyone who knows anything about Stephens, or followed her extraordinary run to the US Open title three years ago, knows that her ranking is irrelevant: When the American is on, she’s a world-beater.

Stephens struggled at the start of 2020, going 1-5, but has looked in good form in exhibition tennis – will she bring that same form to Lexington in August?

Venus Williams

A third US Open champion in the Top Seed Open field comes in the shape of the elder Williams sister. Despite celebrating her 40th birthday in June, Williams is as fierce a competitor as ever. A quarterfinalist at Auckland, Indian Wells, Birmingham and Cincinnati in 2019, the seven-time Grand Slam champion will be looking for her first singles victories of 2020 in Lexington.

Coco Gauff

Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff exploded on to the scene and shot to fame in 2019 when, despite being just 15 years old, she successfully qualified for Wimbledon, defeated Venus Williams in the first round and reached the last 16. By the end of the season, Gauff had picked up her first WTA Tour title in Linz. Currently ranked world no. 52, Gauff is the youngest player in the top 100 and started her 2020 season by reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open, ousting defending champion Naomi Osaka on the way.

Amanda Anisimova

Another sensational teenager in the Top Seed Open field, Anisimova broke into the top 100 at the end of 2018 when she made her first WTA Tour final. The 18-year-old American went on to win her maiden WTA title on clay in Bogota in 2019 before reaching the semifinals of the French Open, knocking out defending champion Simona Halep on the way.

Anisimova is currently ranked world no. 28 and reached the semifinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland in January.

Victoria Azarenka

Two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka has had some of her best results on American hard courts, including completing the ‘Sunshine Double’ in 2016 and twice reaching the final of the US Open.

Injury and personal troubles have led to some tough times for the former world no. 1 from Belarus, and she will be looking for her first match win of 2020 when she joins the draw at the Top Seed Open.

Aryna Sabalenka

Azarenka’s compatriot Sabalenka will be looking to pick up exactly where she left off before the WTA Tour was suspended – the world no. 11 had won the Qatar Total Open in February, and is just 10 points off getting back into the top 10.

Possessed of an incredibly powerful, hard-hitting game, Sabalenka won two hard-court titles in 2019 and was a Western & Southern Open semifinalist in 2018.

About the Lexington Open

The Lexington Open, formally titled the Top Seed Open presented by Bluegrass Orthopaedics, is a WTA Tour event taking place for the first time in 2020.

The city of Lexington, the second-largest in the state of Kentucky, and its Top Seed Tennis Club hosts some of the WTA Tour’s biggest stars when it takes place in August. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Coco Gauff and Garbine Muguruza are among the players who have entered the inaugural edition of the tournament, scheduled from 10-16 August 2020.

The Top Seed Open is designated an International-level event, and hence offers 280 ranking points to the champion as well as prize money of $275,000. But the Lexington event can offer even more than that – it will be the first elite tennis tournament to be played outside Europe since early March. As such, it’s a chance for American and American-based players to get back to doing what they do best, and an opportunity to tune up games ahead of the US Open, scheduled to be played behind closed doors in New York from 31 August-13 September.

Lexington has also been the home of a tournament currently called the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships since 1995, which is part of the ATP Challenger Tour (men) and the ITF Women’s Circuit (women).
