The evergreen and ever popular Venus Williams returns to the courts at Cincinnati to take on the world #16 Veronika Kudermetova.

It is stating the obvious that, at the age of 43, that Venus has slowed down in terms of the events that she plays. She has played 11 matches in the last twelve months, and won only two.

However, that doesn’t mean that she has been performing badly. All of her matches in 2023 have been very competitive, even her straight sets defeats have been close and against in-form players, such as Madison Keys and Elina Svitolina.

Kudermetova has had a quite inconsistent year, at times looking superb, but losing early in other competitions. This is Kudermetova’s first competition since losing in the second round of Wimbledon to eventual champion, Marketa Vondrousova. It is always difficult to know in these situations whether that means that the player will be ring-rusty or well-rested.

One has to favour Kudermetova in this match-up just from a form perspective, especially as this will be their first ever meeting. However, Venus Williams will certainly make a match of it and push Kudermetova all the way.

Their latest encounter gets under way from around 19:30 BST (15:30pm local time) and will be contested over the best of three sets.

Either Qinwen Zheng or Anastasia Potapova will await the winner in the second round of the Western & Southern Open.
