Jelena Ostapenko and Veronika Kudermetova will square off in the final of the 2022 Dubai Tennis Championships on Saturday at 15.00pm (UK Time).
Jelena Ostapenko did it again as she managed her third consecutive comeback of the week. She fought back from 2-6 down in the first set to beat two-time champion Simona Halep 7-6, 6-0. The most impressive fact is that Ostapenko has faced Grand Slam winners in each of the four rounds. She has beaten the likes of Kenin, Swiatek, Kvitova and Halep.
It seems that the Latvian has rediscovered her form here in Dubai after an awful two-year period. Jelena has failed to win more than two matches in a row from January 2020 to May 2021 and was placed outside the top 50 last season.
Meanwhile, Veronika Kudermetova has also faced a couple of strong opponents in the first two rounds. Firstly, she defeated Azarenka in straight sets and then Muguruza in three sets. In addition, she followed this up with another three-set victory over Teichmann. Then, she got fortunate as Vondrousova withdrew from the semifinal with just a few hours of notice.
This will be Kudermetova’s only 4th WTA final and the third at the 500 level. She has only won one title during this run, which was in Charleston last April. Actually, this will be Kudermetova’s second final of the season after finishing as the runner-up to Halep in Melbourne a month ago.
We’re expecting a tough contest here. Ostapenko has a huge morale boost after defeating four previous Grand Slam champions en route to the final. On the flip side, Kudermetova has also defeated two previous Grand Slam winners. Furthermore, she is more rested after Vondrousova’s withdrawal from the semifinal.
