Andy Watson in WTA Tour 06 Nov 2023

The 52nd edition of the WTA Finals are in Cancun, Mexico this year. This will be the finals’ second visit to Mexico after Guadalajara hosted in 2021.

The best eight WTA singles players over the course of 2023 will fight it out over two groups and then the semi-final and final stages to crown the 2023 WTA Finals winner. There is also a doubles competition that is played alongside the singles with the same format, eight teams and two groups, however, this article focuses on the singles tournament.

The Format

There are two groups of four that are drawn according to seeding.

The group format will be played as a round robin. Each player will play the other in a best-of-3 set match, and the two players that earn the most match wins will qualify for the semi-finals.

In the case of a tie, the head-to-head record between the players would be the first tie-breaker. In the case of three players tied, percentage of sets won would come into play.

The Schedule

Play begins on 29th October and there will be two singles matches per day, and two doubles also on the programme. The matches will alternate groups until the six days of round robin play is completed.

Saturday 4th November will see the singles semi-finals being played, with the WTA Finals final being played on Sunday 5th November.
