Serena Williams is finally back on the WTA tour as she takes on Nadia Podoroska today at the Italian Open.
Serena Williams hasn’t played any event since the Australian Open and it seems that she only preferred to play at Grand Slams lately. However, she is now coming to Rome on the back of a decent run of results on hard courts. She reached the Semi-finals in Melbourne at the Yarra Valley Classic back in February when she was forced to withdraw due to an injury and then lost in straight sets in the Semi-finals of the Aussie Open against Naomi Osaka. The last time when Serena competed here in Rome was in 2019 when she withdrew in the 2nd round against her sisters, Venus.
Nadia Podoroska already caused an upset here in Rome by beating Laura Siegemund yesterday after an entertaining three-set match. This was Podoroska’s first match on clay since her last year’s unbelievable performance at the French Open when she managed to reach the Semi-finals despite the fact she came as a qualifier. Prior to that loss against Iga Swiatek in the French Open Semi-finals, Nadia was on an amazing 13-match winning streak on clay.
Serena Williams is heavily favored to win, but we think that Nadia Podoroska can sneak a set here. Our prediction is Over 20.5 games at 4/5.
