Karolina Pliskova v Venus Williams live stream | Western & Southern Open preview

Karolina Pliskova will take on Venus Williams in the First Round of the 2022 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Czech star Pliskova comes into this event as the number 14 seed and is bidding to replicate her triumph here back in 2016.

The former US Open and Wimbledon finalist had endured a season to forget prior to last week’s Canadian Open, having won just 10 of her 22 matches.

However, victories over Barbora Krejcikova, Amanda Anisimova, Maria Sakkari and Qinwen Zheng carried her to the Semi-Finals in Toronto before eventually losing out to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Pliskova, who has reached at least the Quarter-Final stage in four of her last six US Open appearances, is out to warm up for her latest Flushing Meadows campaign with a strong run here, but starts out against a legend of the sport.

Williams’ tournament appearances have proven few and far between in recent years as the American star nears the end of her illustrious career.

Now aged 42, Venus has featured in only two tournaments so far this season and is yet to register a victory.

Her last win came in the opening round of Wimbledon 2021, with recent defeats to Rebecca Marino at the Washington Open and Jil Teichmann in the Canadian Open.

The former singles and doubles world number one and seven-time Grand Slam winner will be eyeing an upset here as she builds up to what could be her last US Open campaign later this month alongside her sister Serena – who recently announced her intention to retire.

Either Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina or Belgium’s Elise Mertens will await the winner in the Second Round later in the week.
