The 2020 Abierto Zapopan in Guadalajara, Mexico is live between March 15-21, 2020 and boasts a number of WTA top 100 stars.
With the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells cancelled due to coronavirus fears, the WTA $125k tournament in Guadalajara – named the Abierto Zapopan – has expanded its draw from 32 to 56 so players can compete and get some match practice in ahead of the Miami Open, which at the time of writing, is still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
Rising star Veronika Kudermetova is the defending champion and judging by artwork on the official tournament website, is one of the players that is making the late decision to join the expanded Guadalajara draw.
The full entry list hasn’t been released at the time of writing, with players having until Wednesday March 11 in Mexico to meet the entry list deadline, but when it’s confirmed, we will have all the information here.
As for the original list, it’s full of talented top 100 players. Magda Linette, a two-time WTA champion over the last eight months in The Bronx and Hua Hin, is currently ranked No. 36 in the world and should be amongst the top seeds, depending on who else joins the draw in the coming days.
One of the stand-out players on the list is Marie Bouzkova – the young Czech star who loves playing in Mexico and recently made her first WTA final in Monterrey, losing out in a high-quality three-set battle to top 10 player Elina Svitolina.
Alison Van Uytvanck, Sorana Cirstea, Christina McHale and Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig are names tennis fans will instantly recognise, while former top 5 player and Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard has been awarded a wildcard.
Mexican fans will also have a player to support, with Renata Zarazua – who recently made headlines when she became the first Mexican to reach a WTA semi-final in 27 years when she did so in Acapulco last month, defeating former U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens along the way.
