Carlos Alcaraz launches his Wimbledon campaign against French veteran Jeremy Chardy in the first round on Tuesday.
The top seed at SW19 for the first time this year, the 20-year-old is aiming to become only the third Spaniard to lift the Gentleman’s Singles Trophy after Rafael Nadal (2008 and 2010) and Manuel Santana (1966).
Alcaraz has been the joint-most successful player on the ATP Tour this season having won five titles – level with Daniil Medvedev – triumphing at Indian Wells, Madrid, Barcelona and Buenos Aires along the way.
And the world number one then claimed his maiden grass-court silverware at Queen’s Club and is now 40-4 in 2023, in which he has also reached the French Open semi-finals after missing the Australian Open through injury.
Alcaraz has never lost in the opening round of a grand slam, and he will certainly fancy extending that unblemished record against world number 542 Chardy.
The 36-year-old is aiming to become only the fifth player to defeat his opponent this season, after Cameron Norrie, Jannik Sinner, Florian Maroszan and Novak Djokovic.
Although, he will be a heavy underdog to do so in what will only be his fifth match of the campaign with his sole singles victory coming against Daniel Galan in Melbourne, where he also reached the men’s doubles semi-finals alongside Patrice Martin.
The Frenchman, who missed the entire 2022 season due to health and injury problems, is set for his 14th appearance at the All England Club, with his best performance being a run to the fourth round nine years ago.
The winner of this match will play either Alexandre Muller or Arthur Rinderknech in the second round at Wimbledon.
Play gets underway at 1pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court No.1.
