Novak Djokovic is seeking his 30th straight win at Wimbledon when he locks horns with Jordan Thompson in the second round on Wednesday.

The seven-time champion continues his quest to equal Roger Federer’s title record in what will be his first ever meeting with the Australian.

Despite rain delays and an early break of serve, Djokovic did not endure too many difficulties during his straight-sets victory over Pedro Cachin, seeing off the Argentine debutant 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.

The Serb has now won each of his last 29 matches at SW19, where his last defeat came at the hands of Sam Querrey in the third round seven years ago (he retired injured against Tomas Berdych in the 2017 quarter-finals).

Djokovic has only failed to progress beyond the second round once in his 17 previous appearances at the All England Club – the sole occasion coming back in 2008 – while the 2017 Australian Open marks the most recent time that occurred at a grand slam.

But he will not be taking anything for granted against his opponent, who has form on grass during his seventh appearance at Wimbledon.

Thompson arrived off the back of reaching the final in s’Hertogenbosch, while he was also a Challenger Tour semi-finalist at Surbiton – losing to Andy Murray.

A Challenger Tour winner in Rome and Gwangju this season, the Australian built on that momentum by recovering from two sets down to defeat Brandon Nakashima in the opening round.

The world number 70 now looks to match his best performance at Wimbledon, where he reached round three in 2021 – beating then 12th seed Casper Ruud and former US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori along the way.

So while the world number 70 will be a heavy underdog, he undoubtedly has the pedigree on surface to make things far from straightforward for his opponent.

Play gets underway at around 5.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.
