French Open finalist Karolina Muchova has a good Wimbledon record, but has a very tough round one opponent in 2022 semi-finalist Jule Niemeier.
Muchova’s usual problem is that she has been regularly unfit, but during her Roland-Garros run three weeks ago she looked physically good. However, she has not played a single warm-up match on grass, which cannot be ideal preparation for Wimbledon
However, if any player can come in cold to a different surface it is probably Muchova. She is a highly skilled player with lots of natural skills that she can adapt to a grass court.
Niemeier is a very powerful player, as we saw at SW19 last year. Her serve is excellent for the grass, but with the lack of ranking points given out for her run last year she has failed to breakthrough into the seedings for this year’s tournament.
Indeed, Niemeier has an appalling 2023 record of 8 wins and 16 defeats. The grass may spark the German into life, but there is little by way of good form in her book this season.
The pair have never played each other before, but Muchova has won her last nine opening round matches. It is likely that she will make it ten in a row here against player low on confidence.
The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of three sets on Tuesday, will play either Linda Noskova or Dalma Galfi in the second round at Wimbledon.
