A potentially thrilling encounter is in store as former world number three Maria Sakkari faces talented Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the opening round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
The Greek is not having a vintage season by her standards. Sakkari hasn’t reached a final in 2023, but has made, and lost, in a series of semi-finals in Berlin, Indian Wells, Doha, and Linz.
It is probably fair to say that Kostyuk hasn’t quite broken through to the extent that was expected of her when she was transitioning through to the main tour. The Ukrainian was a world junior Australian Open champion and a former junior No2 in the world.
Sakkari has dominated both previous meetings between the pair, winning both in straight sets, though neither match was on grass.
A concerning statistic for Kostyuk fans is that she is still waiting for her first win over a player ranked in the world’s Top Ten. She is currently 0-14 against players of that ranking. One must expect Sakkari to come through this test when considering the form.
The winner of this match, which will be contested over the best of three sets on Tuesday, will play either Alison Riske-Amitraj or Paula Badosa in the second round at Wimbledon.
