WTA Lyon Open Players 2020

The inaugural edition of the Open 6ème Sens Métropole de Lyon has attracted a strong field of players keen to soak up the surroundings of the historic city and sharpen up their games for the upcoming major spring hard-court events of Indian Wells and Miami.

Sofia Kenin

The newest star in women’s tennis, 21-year-old Kenin headlines the WTA Lyon draw in 2020 as she looks for her first victories after her sensational win at the Australian Open.

Named the WTA Tour’s most improved player of 2019 after winning a trio of titles, Kenin was nevertheless not expected to climb the rankings quite so quickly, but the American is a tenacious competitor who thrives on the big stage and the stars aligned for her at the 2020 Australian Open where she defeated Coco Guaff, world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty and Garbine Muguruza in the final to claim her maiden major.

Kristina Mladenovic

‘Kiki’, as she is known, is France’s no. 1 player in singles as well as being the world no. 3 doubles player.

Ranked inside the top 10 in 2017, Mladenovic was a finalist in Madrid, Stuttgart and Acapulco that year. In addition to having won four Grand Slam titles in doubles, she is a two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist in singles and made the quarterfinals or better at eight WTA Tour events in 2019.

Caroline Garcia

Lyon native Caroline Garcia is one of the big draws at the Open de Lyon in 2020. Part of France’s Fed Cup-winning team who beat Australia in the 2019 final, Garcia is the only player to have won the Wuhan Open and China Open back-to-back and was ranked as high as world no. 4 in 2018. She has seven WTA Tour titles to her name, most recently triumphing at the Nottingham Open in 2019.

Alize Cornet

Another top-seeded French player at the Open de Lyon, 30-year-old Cornet was ranked as high as world no. 11 in 2019 and is a perennial presence on the WTA  Tour.

Cornet is looking for the seventh WTA Tour title of her career in Lyon in 2020.

About the Open de Lyon

A new stop on the WTA Tour in 2020, the Open 6ème Sens Métropole de Lyon adds another European indoor tournament to the WTA’s spring calendar.

Played in the first week of March, WTA Lyon offers players the opportunity to compete in the historic surroundings of the city of Lyon and sharpen up their games ahead of the back-to-back Premier Mandatory events which take up the rest of the month, Indian Wells ands Miami.

One of 32 International-level tournaments on the WTA Tour’s 2020 calendar, the Open de Lyon offers 290 ranking points to the champion and prize money of $275,000.

The Open 6ème Sens Métropole de Lyon is the second top-level women’s tournament to be held in France, joining the French Open, which is played at Roland Garros beginning in late May. France is one of the strongest nations in women’s tennis, with four players currently ranked inside the top 100, and have featured in the final of the Fed Cup twice in the past four years, finishing runner-up to the Czech Republic in 2016 and claiming the title in 2020 with a brilliant defeat of Australia.

WTA Lyon is played at the Palais de Sports Gerland, which features a 5,910-seat stadium and hosted the ATP Tour tournament Open Sud de France until 2009, when it relocated to Montpellier. Lyon still plays host to a men’s event – the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Lyon – which is played on outdoor hard courts the week before the French Open.
