Gael Monfils looks to delight his home crowd once again when he plays Lorenzo Musetti in the French Open second round on Wednesday.

The players ranked 37th and 30th in the world respectively go head to head at Roland Garros, with a potential showdown against reigning champion Novak Djokovic on offer to the winner.

Monfils arrived for his 17th appearance at the season’s second major on the back of three straight defeats, but stopped the rot with a four-set victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

A semi-finalist here in 2008, the 37-year-old has also reached a further two quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

Meanwhile, Musetti enjoyed a straight-sets victory over Daniel Galan in round one following mixed preparations for the French Open.

A run to the Adelaide quarter-finals represents the best ATP performance of the year for the Italian, who also retired injured in round one in Rome, but he warmed up for this tournament by reaching Challenger Tour finals in Cagliari and Turin.

Monfils is enjoying a resurgence in his late 30s, reaching the Doha semi-finals while beating the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie in Indian Wells.

But not since 2019 has the 37-year-old reached the third round at his home slam.

That will certainly encourage Musetti, who has been to the last 16 in two of his three previous appearances at Roland Garros.

Age could prove to be a crucial factor in this contest, and favour the 22-year-old Italian.
