Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur go head to head on Wednesday with the last remaining French Open semi-final spot up for grabs.
Following Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from Roland Garros with a knee injury, Casper Ruud received a bye and awaits the winner of this match in the last four.
With 24-time major winner Djokovic bowing out, a new French Open champion will be crowned this year, and both players will see this as a genuine chance to find a first career slam.
They boast contrasting records when it comes to this event, though.
Zverev is the only player to reach the semi-finals in each of the last three editions.
The Italian Open champion has now won each of his last 10 ATP matches on clay, following back-to-back five-set victories over Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune.
The latter took his tally of match wins at Roland Garros to 32, the most in the men’s singles among players born in 1990 or later.
Meanwhile, De Minaur arrived this year with a 3-7 record, and had never previously progressed beyond the second round.
However, he has rewritten the history books, with his comeback victory over former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev making him the first Australian man since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004 to reach the quarter-finals here.
The match gets under way at 7.15pm BST (8.15pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Alexander Zverev v Alex de Minaur prediction
Zverev is gearing up for his 12th major quarter-final, with six of those coming at Roland Garros (making him the sixth different player to reach that tally in the men’s singles during the Open Era).
By contrast, this is only the second time De Minaur will play in the last eight at a slam, matching his run at the 2020 US Open.
The Australian has arguably enjoyed a more straightforward run to this stage, with Zverev having to dig deep over five sets in his last two matches.
That will likely be the case again here, but the German’s experience and knowhow when it comes to the latter stages at Roland Garros could prove the decisive factor.
