Carlos Alcaraz looks to continue the strong start to his Wimbledon title defence in a tricky third-round clash with Frances Tiafoe on Friday.

The reigning champion is aiming to join an exclusive group of players – including the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg – to successfully defend their men’s singles crown in the Open Era.

Alcaraz certainly appears to be in the form to do so, having reeled off six sets without reply in seeing off Mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vukic.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe is appearing in round three for a fourth straight year following a pair of contrasting victories.

After recovering from two sets down for the first time in his career to deny Matteo Arnaldi, he then defeated Borna Coric in straight sets.

The winner of this clash will play either Ugo Humbert or Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round.

Play gets under way at around 1.30pm BST on Friday, and will be contested over the best of five sets on Centre Court.

The pair have endured contrasting seasons up to now.

Alcaraz is eyeing his third silverware of 2024, having already triumphed at Indian Wells and the French Open.

The Spaniard has now reached at least the third round in each of his last 11 majors.

Tiafoe was a runner-up in Houston and semi-finalist at Delray Beach, though they represent the only previous occasions this term he has won successive matches.

That general inconsistency may come back to bite him against an inspired Alcaraz, who is seeking a 10th straight win at SW19.
