Novak Djokovic launches his latest US Open title defence against Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot in the opening round on Monday.

The Serb triumphed at Flushing Meadows for the fourth time 12 months ago after defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, adding to his successes in 2011, 2015 and 2018.

Djokovic is gearing up for his 18th appearance in the Big Apple, where he has reached a further six finals and never failed to progress beyond the second round.

And the 24-time major winner is fresh from completing the career golden slam earlier this month, when he avenged his Wimbledon showpiece defeat by Carlos Alcaraz by claiming gold in Paris.

Meanwhile, this is Albot’s 10th US Open appearance, which he secured with victories over Javier Barranco Cosano, Luca Van Assche and Shintaro Mochizuki in qualifying.

The 34-year-old reached the third round here in 2017, though those two match wins represent his only previous successes.

The match gets under way at around 2am BST (9pm local time) on Monday and will be contested over the best of five sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

That straight-sets defeat by Alcaraz at SW19 represents Djokovic’s only reverse in the last 16 matches he has played.

Meanwhile, this is only his opponent’s 10th ATP main-draw match of the season, with his best performance seeing him reach a Challenger Tour final in Girona.

Therefore, it is hard to see any outcome other than a commanding Djokovic win.
