Carlos Alcaraz v Li Tu | US Open preview, betting tips and H2H

Carlos Alcaraz commences his quest for a second US Open title when he faces Flushing Meadows debutant Li Tu in round one on Tuesday.

The Spaniard claimed his first major crown when he triumphed in the Big Apple two years ago, beating Casper Ruud in the final.

He is also aiming to land his third slam of 2024, following his success at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Alcaraz sparked fears when he withdrew from his practice session on Friday due to an ankle problem, though he has since revealed it was done as a precaution.

His opponent Tu is gearing up for what will be the biggest match of his career – on only his second major main-draw appearance.

Ironically, his previous one also came against a Spaniard in Feliciano Lopez at the 2021 Australian Open, and the 28-year-old will be desperate to give a positive account of himself.

A showdown with either Denis Shapovalov or Botic van De Zandschlup awaits the winner of this clash in the second round.

The match gets under way at around 12am BST (7pm local time) on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz is a heavy odds-on favourite to progress to the second round, though he has demonstrated in recent times he is not immortal – notably his last-32 defeat by Gael Monfils in Cincinnati.

That will provide a ray of hope to his opponent, who is playing only his third ATP main-draw match of the year.

Nevertheless, having reached at least the quarter-finals in all three of his previous Flushing Meadow appearances, you would expect Alcaraz to advance fairly comfortably here.
