Jessica Pegula aims to delight her home crowd once more when she faces Karolina Muchova in the second women’s US Open semi-final on Thursday.

The world number six is still standing at Flushing Meadows, where she is gearing up for the first major semi-final of her career.

Pegula headed into her clash with Iga Swiatek having lost each of her six previous quarter-final matches at a slam.

However, the National Bank Open champion dominated the world number one for a hugely impressive straight-sets victory, adding to her wins over the likes of Sofia Kenin and 18th seed Diana Shnaider.

Meanwhile, Muchova clinically put Beatriz Haddad Maia to the sword 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-finals, having already seen off the likes of Naomi Osaka and French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini.

Only the second Czech woman in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals in New York without dropping a single set, her exploits are all the more impressive given she only recently returned to action after wrist surgery.

A showdown with either Aryna Sabalenka or Emma Navarro awaits the winner of this clash in Saturday’s US Open final.

The match gets under way at around 11.30pm BST (6.30pm local time) on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Muchova certainly holds the advantage in terms of experience at this level.

Indeed, this is her fourth major semi-final appearance, and second in as many years at Flushing Meadows.

But like the Czech, Pegula has also reeled off 10 sets without reply this fortnight, and she will be full of momentum after denying Swiatek.

The American will have her home crowd right behind her once more on Friday and, should that inspire her in a similar way, it could get her over the line.
