Jannik Sinner became the first Wimbledon singles champion from Italy after beating Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling final on Sunday.

The world number one came from behind to prevail 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a high-quality championship match at the All England Club, where he denied the Spaniard a third straight title.

Sinner also avenged his heartbreaking French Open final defeat from two sets up against Alcaraz at Roland-Garros five weeks earlier, while claiming a fourth major crown.

The world number two, who won in a fifth-set tie-break in Paris, had no answer this time around, as he suffered his first defeat at the sixth attempt in a grand slam final.

“I had a very tough loss in Paris,” Sinner said. “It doesn’t really matter how you win or lose, especially at important tournaments.

“You just have to understand what you did wrong and try to work on that. We tried to accept the loss and just keep working. This is one of the reasons I’m holding this trophy.

“The last game, I served very well. I had some tough moments. I’m very happy that I held my nerve. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Centre Court was set for a blockbuster battle between the world’s top two players who, between them, had won each of the last six major men’s singles titles.

Sinner landed the first blow when he broke in the fifth game, but surrendered that advantage when he fired into the net three games later.

The opening set came down to a mouth-watering rally that culminated in Alcaraz, somehow, steering the Italian’s powerful forehand down the line back into the empty court to draw first blood.

Nevertheless, Sinner responded immediately by breaking in the opening game of the second set, which he subsequently sealed with two rasping forehands.

Despite landing 15 aces, Alcaraz’s service game was not firing on all cylinders, hitting seven double-faults overall. After surviving two break points in game one of the third set, he was broken in the ninth and Sinner completed the turnaround for a 2-1 advantage.

The top seed broke again in game three of the fourth, thanks to a couple of thumping backhands down the line. He almost surrendered that advantage in game eight, only for Alcaraz to see two break points go begging.

It ultimately proved costly. Despite the Spaniard holding to ensure Sinner would serve for the title, the Italian never looked like he would let the opportunity pass.

Although Alcaraz saved one championship point, another blistering Sinner serve was too hot to return, and an unprecedented victory belonged to an Italian in Wimbledon singles competition.

“It’s always difficult to lose in the final,” two-time champion Alcaraz said.

“Wimbledon is the most beautiful tournament that we have. I just feel at home every time that I come here. I love playing here. The atmosphere is insane. I’m going to be back, for sure.”
